Algorithm

The set of mathematical rules that determines which signals search engines evaluate, and with what weight, when ranking web pages.

Algorithm is the complete set of mathematical rules and signals that search engines use when evaluating and ranking web pages to deliver the most relevant and highest-quality results for user queries.

Google’s search algorithm combines hundreds of ranking signals; the main ones include:

  • Content quality and topical relevance
  • Backlink profile and authority
  • User experience (Core Web Vitals)
  • Mobile friendliness
  • Page freshness
  • Local and linguistic signals
  • Match with user intent

Google makes thousands of small changes (algorithm updates) every year. The vast majority of these are not announced; only major updates such as “core updates” are officially disclosed.

Tip: Instead of trying to chase algorithm changes, focus on content that delivers real value to users and a solid technical foundation. In the long run, this is the only durable strategy.
