Keyword Stuffing (Keyword Stuffing) is the repeated use of a target keyword at an unnatural frequency, often in a way that disrupts the context, to artificially boost a page’s rankings.
This tactic was common in the early 2000s, but today it is considered spam and penalized by the Google Penguin algorithm and broader quality signals.
Examples of keyword stuffing:
- “Buy the best shoes cheap shoes quality shoes affordable shoes…”
- Listing meaningless keywords in a block at the bottom of the page
- Adding hidden keywords in white text on a white background
- A 50-word comma-separated list in the meta description
In modern SEO, keyword density is no longer an important metric. Instead, covering the topic thoroughly and naturally (semantic SEO) is what matters.
Tip: Write for the user first, then place the target keyword naturally in the title, subheadings, and first paragraph. Using synonyms and related concepts shows the search engine that the topic is covered in depth.
