SEO Term

Meta Title

The text defined in the <title> tag of a page's HTML and shown as the blue headline in search results; one of the strongest on-page SEO signals.

Meta Title (Page Title / Title Tag) is the title defined in the <title> tag within the <head> section of an HTML page. It appears in the browser tab, as the blue clickable headline in search results, and in social media shares.

Characteristics of a good meta title:

  • Length: 50-60 characters (Google usually truncates it after 580 pixels)
  • Put the target Keyword near the beginning
  • The brand name is usually added at the end
  • Strong words that drive clicks (“guide,” “free,” “2026”)
  • It should be unique on every page

In some cases, Google may ignore the meta title and generate a title from the page content instead, especially if the title is too generic or incomplete. For this reason, the title should appeal to users while also accurately reflecting the page content.

Tip: Review the titles of pages with low CTR. Run A/B tests to try different title formulations (question format, number-based title, promise-based title).
